Ways to Change the Colors of your Fabric Vertical Blinds

Fabric vertical blinds have been used in our offices and homes for as long as we could remember. Although the vanes of the vertical blinds could be made from other materials such as plastic, PVC, wood but fabric seems to be the most popular as you have lotsa of options to choose from in terms of the color and texture. In addition, fabric vertical blinds are also flexible where you can change the colors of the vanes whenever necessary. There are a few ways that you could change the colors of the vanes and I would to share the top 4 ways to do it below:

Top of the list is to replace the fabric of your vertical blinds. Fabric inserts can be removed from the "groover inserts" and replaced. I have seen quite a few sites online where you can order replacements in hundreds of colors. Search groover inserts vertical blinds.

You can also spray painted the vertical blinds. A friend of mine did this on his vertical blinds and he was very pleased with the paint itself. However, the vertical blinds took on a little puckered look in spots. Not real bad but enough to notice. You just have to iron the vertical blinds on the back side and it helped some. This process actually works but they aren't quite as straight as before. It also could be because he washed the vertical blinds before he painted them.

You could use a rotary cutter and ruler (used by quilters) to cut the fabric for your vertical blinds. I have purchased this kind of vertical blinds before but without the fabric and cut wallpaper strips to fit the vanes. I was able to change the color at least 3 times over the years before my vertical blinds' vanes started to give way.

Another cost saving way is to paint the vertical blinds' slats with wall paint and you can find fabric that adhere to them. They have done this on a decorating show before. After painting the vertical blinds' vanes, take the vertical blinds out, lay them flat and paint them. You could use the leftover wall paint-maybe every other one in the 2 colors?

However a word of caution before you try any of the methods on your vertical blinds, please test the methods out first on your old or unwanted vertical blinds before proceeding with the real thing!

Recently one my friends wanted to do something about his plastic vertical blinds that had been in his home for the last few years. It was becoming an eye sore as the plastic vanes was old and made the whole house look shabby. He wanted to replace it with new window blinds possibly fabric vertical blinds but he didn’t want to throw away the existing plastic vertical blinds. So…there’s only one thing to do…keep the existing plastic vertical blinds and cover the blinds with fabric to give it the soft and warmth look plus a “new” updated vertical blinds.

Here’re some of the methods that he tried on his vertical blinds and it turned out quite alright. But I suggest that you do it at your own risk.

1. Disassembly. First, remove the vanes from the track of the vertical blinds and lay them out on a clean floor covered with plastic or cloth. Gently wipe down the surface with a mild soap or cleaner, and allow to dry thoroughly. Because most vanes are curved, be careful not to crack them by applying too much pressure on them.
2. Fabric on plastic blinds. The hardest part of adding fabric to your vertical blinds will be cutting the fabric to the exact size of your blinds. Use a mat and rotary cutter if you have one, and be sure to measure carefully. (Then measure again!) To attach the fabric, we recommend a strong glue or adhesive applied with a foam brush to avoid bubbling and wrinkling. Smooth out the fabric with a smooth-bristled brush or tool used to smooth wallpaper, and allow to dry thoroughly before re-hanging.
3. More ideas for plastic and vinyl vertical blinds. An easier project than covering with fabric is to paint the vertical blinds. Spray paint would give an even first coat, and decorative textures would add a finished look. You could even sponge on another color, stencil a decorative border, or stamp on fun polka dots.
4. Fabric on fabric vertical blinds. If you already have fabric vertical blinds, you can add another layer of fabric using iron-on fusible webbing, such as Wonder-Under (available at fabric stores). We love the possibilities this allows for custom fabrics and bold patterns.
5. Accessories for fabric vertical blinds. Another idea is to simply add dramatic details to existing fabric blinds. Express your creativity with fun accents like rickrack, pom-poms, striped ribbons, cowboy fringe, and more.
6. More ideas for fabric vertical blinds. Other creative ideas for updating fabric vanes include adding a coordinating fabric on every other vane for a geometric look, using fabric dye to bring an exact color match to your room, or using a bleach pen to add unique designs.

Cleaning Vertical Blinds - How to remove mildew stains from your vertical blinds

I have touched on the subject of cleaning vertical blinds in my previous blog postings. In those postings, the methods recommended were more for keeping your vertical blinds free of dusts and common dirt problem. However if you have tougher stains like mildew stains on your vertical blinds, those methods might not work that well anymore. Therefore, I have compiled a list of suggestions on how to remove these stains from your vertical blinds.

1) Try Dettol Mold and Mildew Remover on your vertical blinds. It contains bleach so check a small area first. Spray a damp cloth and wipe your vertical blinds with it. Leave a few minutes and then rinse. Might be easier to take the vertical blinds down if you can. This stuff is the best stuff in the world for that sort of thing though. It really does get rid of anything. Comes in a green bottle.
2) You can also use steam from pressure steam cleaner to remove the stains from your vertical blinds. If you don’t have one, try using steam kettle.
3) If you have metal or plastic vertical blinds then you can try washing in a solution of bleach water- mix 1/2 cup bleach is a gal of water- or read instruction on bleach bottle label- apply to your vertical blinds with cloth and rub gently - should come right off- then rinse off with clear water
4) Take the vertical blinds outside, or hang the vertical blinds in a bathtub and spray them with Castrol Super Clean. Wait about 20 to 30 seconds and hose them off (don't wet them down before spraying with Super Clean) - no scrubbing or trying to get anything out around of the little rope holes... just clean and your vertical blinds will look like new again.
5) Another way is to gently clean the vertical blinds with warm water, a bit of bleach, a bit of washing up liquid or take the vertical blinds down and put it in the bath with warm water and washing powder. But don’ t put the very top in just the slats clean them down then dry them off.
6) One of the more creative suggestions on cleaning your vertical blinds is by filling your bathtub with 3 - 4 inches of water, add 2 cups of vinegar and 1/2 box of baking soda...soak the vertical blinds for 20 minutes, rinse and hang till dry. If they are white vertical blinds use 1 cup of bleach instead of vinegar and baking soda.
7) Go to the nearest supermarket or convenient store and get a product called Magic stick. Apply the magic stick to the mildew on your vertical blinds, leave for 15 minutes and then wash according to instructions. It works like magic on your vertical blinds

It can be quite frustrating if you do not know how to measure vertical blinds correctly and it doesn’t fit or cover your windows or doors properly. If you have to “moolah”, you can probably engaged an interior designer or vertical blinds specialist to do all the work for you. Unfortunately not all of us are that privileged, we have to learn from trials and errors in measuring and installing vertical blinds. Below are some of tips that you can follow to measure your windows as well as installing your vertical blinds.

1) The first tip is that vertical blinds should be measured from where you want to install them. If you are putting the vertical blinds up on the interior of the casing, you will measure on the inside of the window. 4) Most of the time, you will get vertical blinds of varying length for the differne types of windows in your home. Some people like to cover only the window area of their window with the vertical blinds. This can be done given that you measure the interior or the exterior situations of your window. For cases where you are measuring to have the vertical blinds put on the inside of the casing, it is difficult or impossible to have the vertical blinds that will be longer than the window which will make the vertical blinds stick out at the bottom and become an eye sore to you!

Just the other day, someone opened the door at their patio, that person must have forgotten that there were vertical blinds hanging on the patio. Well what happened was he forgot to open the vertical blinds, so the blinds caught each other on the stems and now it’s broken and the slats just refuse to open. The whole family got involved and after some initial blaming sessions, they decided to look for a solution to rectify the broken vertical blinds. The last resort would be to engage a vertical blinds repairman but they decided to take their case online and they came back with a few very good suggestions on how to repair their vertical blinds. Here are some of them:

First of all, we got to understand how the vertical blinds actually open and close. Basically, there is a hex shaped rod in the head unit over which each curtain hanger slides and rotates. The rod drives a Round plastic gear that meshes with a plastic screw gear that drives the rotation of the blinds. So you can unclip all the vertical blinds, so they don't get in the way, and run the chain through enough cycles to see if all the pins are rotating? See if you can find a mid point where you can rotate them open and closed. then re-hang the slats. Then make sure your slats are overlapping each other the same from slat to slat.. when you open vertical blinds in the tilted closed position it is easy for one slat to overlap another as they swing back and forth. Most of the time, the slats of your vertical blinds must have gotten flipped so that they are overlapped in the wrong direction. While one or two would be noticeable when trying to tilt them open, that main suspicion is that they are all flipped the wrong way now. Just go from end to end flipping each one so that the edge that was behind the next vane/slat of your vertical blinds, is now in front.

Like I said…if you go through all the suggestions above and the slats of your vertical blinds are still broken or cannot be opened. Call your neighborhood vertical blinds specialist or if you are really frustrated, just rip off your vertical blinds from the wall…drive to the nearest WallMart or Home Depot and get yourself some new vertical blinds!
