Vertical Blinds-Safety Tips for young children

Infants and young children should be kept away from the cords of vertical blinds of the window. It takes only a few seconds for a child to become entangled in the cord of the vertical blinds, which can lead to strangulation. Window blinds especially vertical blinds manufactured before 2001 could represent a strangulation hazard to children. The Window Covering Safety Council urges you to check and childproof all window coverings and window areas including vertical blinds etc in your home. Older vertical blinds for example should be replaced with newer, safer vertical blinds or should be retrofitted to make them safer

Window blind or vertical blinds cords should be secured and located out of child’s reach. Cutting off tassels or break-away tassels of the vertical blinds does not remove the hazard, because the cord can get twisted preventing breakaway tassels from operating, and a child can wrap the cord of the vertical blinds around their head or neck.
Remove linking chains on vertical blinds as they may pose a choking hazards. Many vertical blinds have the blind cord pulley mounted to the window frame or sill. We recommend relocating the pulley of the vertical blinds out of your child’s reach.

Enjoy your vertical blinds and Be Safe!
