Ways to Change the Colors of your Fabric Vertical Blinds

Fabric vertical blinds have been used in our offices and homes for as long as we could remember. Although the vanes of the vertical blinds could be made from other materials such as plastic, PVC, wood but fabric seems to be the most popular as you have lotsa of options to choose from in terms of the color and texture. In addition, fabric vertical blinds are also flexible where you can change the colors of the vanes whenever necessary. There are a few ways that you could change the colors of the vanes and I would to share the top 4 ways to do it below:

Top of the list is to replace the fabric of your vertical blinds. Fabric inserts can be removed from the "groover inserts" and replaced. I have seen quite a few sites online where you can order replacements in hundreds of colors. Search groover inserts vertical blinds.

You can also spray painted the vertical blinds. A friend of mine did this on his vertical blinds and he was very pleased with the paint itself. However, the vertical blinds took on a little puckered look in spots. Not real bad but enough to notice. You just have to iron the vertical blinds on the back side and it helped some. This process actually works but they aren't quite as straight as before. It also could be because he washed the vertical blinds before he painted them.

You could use a rotary cutter and ruler (used by quilters) to cut the fabric for your vertical blinds. I have purchased this kind of vertical blinds before but without the fabric and cut wallpaper strips to fit the vanes. I was able to change the color at least 3 times over the years before my vertical blinds' vanes started to give way.

Another cost saving way is to paint the vertical blinds' slats with wall paint and you can find fabric that adhere to them. They have done this on a decorating show before. After painting the vertical blinds' vanes, take the vertical blinds out, lay them flat and paint them. You could use the leftover wall paint-maybe every other one in the 2 colors?

However a word of caution before you try any of the methods on your vertical blinds, please test the methods out first on your old or unwanted vertical blinds before proceeding with the real thing!

Vertical blinds - definition, types and benefits

If you are new in the whole area of window blinds, you might have come across several popular window blinds eg. vertical blinds. So, what are vertical blinds? Well, like their namesake, vertical blinds are basically window blinds that have slats that run vertically from the top to the bottom. The slats are generally made out of fabric but can also be made from wood or fiber glass. Vertical blinds nowadays come in all sorts or design and color and they are perfect for contemporary homes but vertical blinds such as the wooden ones can also fit the more country type of décor. Vertical blinds are a type of window covering that provides both privacy and controlled lighting. As opposed to the cord-supported horizontal slats of standard mini-blinds, vertical blinds have veins hanging down vertically from the head rail that houses the mechanical components. There are many advantages to vertical blinds, and they make an excellent window covering for large-opening windows.

Vertical blinds can be custom ordered to fit nearly any width window. Standard mini-blinds typically have a maximum width at which they will be sufficient. When custom ordering vertical blinds, you have numerous choices in both design and style.

Vertical blinds come in both vinyl and fabric. You can also choose various textures and colors according to the design plan of your room or home. Most vertical blinds are a neutral solid color on the side that faces the street, so that even if you have different colored blinds in each room, your home has a uniform look from the outside.

The other choices you have with vertical blinds include split, stack and draw. Split is the option to have the vertical blinds open in the center or simply be drawn open to the left or right side. A center split will allow your vertical blinds to be opened like drapes.

Stack refers to which side of the window the blinds open towards. Left stack means all the veins can be drawn to the left side of the window, and right stack is the opposite. You can even elect to have the cord that controls the draw placed on the right or the left, depending on how your room is configured and the placement of the window in the room.

One other option with vertical blinds is to house a remote controlled unit in the mechanics. This means you do not have to open the blinds or adjust their tilt for lighting manually, but rather you can use a remote control. This is a fairly expensive option, but a convenient one nonetheless.

There are very different price ranges for vertical blinds, with styles and designs available for all budgets. In fact, some vertical blinds with decorative head rails are attractive enough that they can serve as stand alone window coverings and eliminate the need for the added expense of drapes. Though you can purchase vertical blinds in standard sizes, such as for a patio door, custom ordered vertical blinds are not much more expensive. Be sure either to have your windows professionally measured before ordering vertical blinds or to ask for detailed instructions on how to measure them from the company from which you plan to purchase your blinds.
